Network Rail fails passengers

NO-ONE can sensibly argue that the badly needed upgrade of the West Coast line can be achieved without disruption.

Such major projects inevitably mean rail closures and with that comes inconvenience for passengers.

It makes sense, therefore, to schedule the work for holiday periods when fewer people are travelling and journeys are likely to be less urgent.

Teeth are clenched and there are a few grumbles from those who endure delays, but generally there is an acceptance of their unhappy lot.

No such patience yesterday, though, when the work was not finished as the festive holiday drew to an end. Nor today when it continued.

Understandably travellers were furious.

Network Rail has muttered the usual apologies and promised that there will be an inquiry into why the work was delayed by staff shortages.

But that is scant consolation to the thousands of people who endured chaos and frustration as they tried to make what should have been routine trips.

Truth is, they have been let down by the inept management of a monopoly that fails to put customers first.

Network Rail is there to serve the travelling public. Yesterday and today it has failed them miserably.

Don't let them down tomorrow.
