IF BIRMINGHAM has real ambition to become an international city then it needs an airport to match that aspiration.
Ryanair's plan to massively increase its services from Birmingham International Airport is a step in that direction. And it is a welcome one.
There will be massive benefits – 5,000 jobs will be created, travellers will have an array of new destinations available, visitors will find it easier to head to Brum and the city's reputation and profile will be enhanced.
Ryanair's faith in BIA will help elevate it from the second division of airports to the higher ranks.
None of this will come without pain, of course.
Local residents will be apprehensive about the impact of increased flights on their lives.
Green campaigners will complain that we need to encourage less air travel, not more.
Cleaner, quieter aircraft are being developed that, hopefully, will calm some of the fears of environmentalists and people who live near the airport.
But the truth is that Birmingham has an airport and people want to fly.
It is good that we are getting a bigger slice of the aviation cake.
