Running the city

THE fleet-footed have long complained that while places such as London and Newcastle have high-profile runs, Birmingham has nothing.

But, just like buses, you wait for ages then two turn up together.

The Birmingham Mail and Macmillan Cancer Support were first out of the blocks last week with the announcement of a 5km fun run next April.

Now the city council has revealed that a half-marathon will be run between the Alexander Stadium and Centenary Square in September next year.

That is great news for the city.

Major events like this raise a city's profile, persuade people to get exercise, create excitement and provide opportunities for fund-raising.

Pull on your running shoes and get ready to shed a few of those Christmas calories by using April's fun run as a stepping stone to next autumn's half-marathon.
