Birmingham's Olypmic triumph

THIS area has got a long and distinguished history of producing high-class athletes.

So it is fitting that next year's Olympic trials should be returning to Birmingham after a four year absence.

The high-profile event will be staged at the Alexander Stadium, a fine venue that is home to the famous Birchfield Harriers.

Local stars like Mark Lewis-Francis, Julian Thomas and Kelly Southerton will be able to compete in their own backyard.

Local athletics fan will be in for a treat as established performers come up against young pretenders.

UK Athletics chief executive Niels de Vos says that Birmingham's central location and the stadium's size make this an ideal venue.

We agree. Make Brum the home of British athletics.
