JUST one hurdle remains to be cleared for Birmingham finally to get the money it needs to replace ramshackle New Street Station.
Government sources insist that only a few more details are needed from the city council and then the go-ahead can be given in mid-January. Let us hope that is the case.
There were hopes that confirmation would be given in the summer, but twice there were delays as Whitehall mandarins demanded further facts and figures.
Birmingham City Council must ensure it swiftly supplies the latest information sought by the pen-pushers.
But, even more importantly, government officials must make clear exactly what they want so New Street Station can be bulldozed and a a sparkling, suitable replacement built.
They cannot continue to find fresh reasons to delay.
For too long travellers have had to ensure appalling conditions at overcrowded, gloomy New Street.
For too long visitors to vibrant, go-ahead Birmingham have arrived at a station more suitable to a 1960s Eastern European backwater.
No more faffing about.
New Street needs knocking down. Now.
