Blue Hell

The most often asked question of the past few days? Easy - what on earth is going on?

The most likely scenario is that Steve Bruce, fed up with his lot at Blues (those who read Saturday's Birmingham Mail will know why) joins Wigan Athletic.

Keith Bertschin will go with him - his path has been cleared - and probably Eric Black, at some stage, if he decides not to accept an offer to become manager, if only for an interim period, which is what Blues want intially at least.

Black feels a large degree of loyalty to Bruce and he has been at St Andrew's for three years, so he knows how the land lies there.

Blues board have not been idle. How can they have been, considering what's happened? The club is crisis.

They have considered and sounded out several candidates as Bruce's successor - including Black - and some very high profile names, I am led to believe.

Trouble is, when you allow your club to get into this sort of state, how do you attract the right calibre of manager?

One route Blues will not go down is the 'usual suspects' of Joe Royle, George Graham and Graeme Souness.

Martin Jol is a no-go, my information has it, and if Carson Yeung - still clinging to his dream of owning Blues - makes proposals, it will more than likely fall on deaf ears.

With many players not due back until Thursday after the international fixtures - and those abroad have been texting asking that very same query I opened this blog with - how Blues will react on Saturday against Portsmouth is another worry.

Whatever the rights or wrongs of Bruce's decision to go, whatever or whoever is to blame, strong action and leadership is needed fast if Blues want to escape an instant return to the Championship.
