JUST when the last grains of hope are trickling away, the unexpected can happen.
Thus it was that Colin and Debbie Moran-Simmonds's thwarted dreams of having a child finally came to fruition,
The result is Shani – whose name appropriately means "marvellous" in Swahili – born from an embryo that had remained frozen for a decade.
The technology that allowed Shani to be born is remarkable. The skill and dedication of the medics involved is impressive.
Yet it is the sheer joyfulness of the story that makes it so extraordinary, so heart-warming.
Colin and Debbie longed to have a child and faced disappointment at every turn.
Lesser people would have given up and, at times, they were tempted to do just that.
But they are made of sterner stuff. Their determination and love compelled them to go on and, eventually, they were rewarded with a smiling, affectionate little daughter.
There is a lesson to be learned here – not only for those striving to become parents, but for everyone facing difficulties.
Even the darkest clouds can disperse.
Happy birthday, Shani! You are a special little girl with a special mum and dad.
