MANY hearts will skip a beat at today's revelation that cars are once again rolling off the production line at Longbridge.
Up to 60 two-seater MGs have already been manufactured at the site by Nanjing – the first cars produced there since MG Rover so tragically collapsed in April 2005.
It is great to see car production return to the world famous site. But no-one should get carried away.
Only 140 people are employed in the operation compared to the 6,500 who lost their jobs with MG Rover's demise.
The number of cars being made at Longbridge is – and is likely to remain – small.
Nevertheless, the MGTF provides jobs, income and maintains a link with this city's automotive heritage.
We hope the two-seater goes on to become a roaring success.
