THE bitter row that erupted several months ago over the opening of a probation service centre in Kitts Green refuses to go away.
Opinions have become entrenched, a 8,500-name petition has been collected, numerous protests have been staged and the centre, built at a cost of £1 million, has been vandalised.
There is no way forward unless the two sides in the conflict sit down and talk.
Residents have a right to expect their voices to be heard. Their concerns and questions should be addressed by the authorities.
Equally, protesters must listen with open minds to the views of West Midlands Probation Service.
Which is why the Birmingham Mail has arranged another of its Big Debates.
Only through such initiatives can the two sides strive to reach some sort of understanding so that this controversy can at long last be resolved.
We are not taking sides - simply providing a platform so that questions can be posed and answered frankly and thoroughly.
Be in no doubt: families' concerns are genuine.
They say the centre, less than a mile from three schools, will attract criminals and sex offenders to the area, putting local youngsters at risk.
It is for probation officials to convince them otherwise.
The debate will be held at 6pm in the Pump community hall in Kitts Green Road, Kitts Green.
