NO-ONE should doubt that this country faces a grave threat from terrorists intent on spilling innocent blood.
But there is no room for alarmist stories that exaggerate the risk.
To do so causes unnecessary fear for the public - a victory for the fanatics who seek to fracture our society not only by planting bombs, but by instilling in our minds the notion that they are stronger than they are.
Exaggeration also threatens to tear apart trust between communities by painting a picture of widespread fanaticism when the influence of this pernicious creed is far smaller.
And it can divert attention from the genuine threats that lurk in the shadows.
The cynical might suspect that national newspaper reports suggesting the West Midlands are a hotspot of al-Qaeda activity smack of spin rather than dispassionate, rigorous accuracy.
The dangers we undoubtedly face must be addressed through vigilance, tough, targeted, intelligent policing and resolve.
Lurid headlines play into the hands of those who wish us harm.
