Don't delay - rebuild New Street

AMID the fog of confusion over whether the government is or is not ready to stump up cash for the rebuilding of New Street Station, one thing shines clear.

The station is unacceptable and must be replaced.

It is overcrowded, dark, unwelcoming and a presents an appalling and false image to travellers newly arriving in vibrant, modern Birmingham.

The Birmingham Mail has campaigned vigorously and tirelessly for the money to be found to built a station that is fit for purpose and pleasant to use. We will continue to do so.

The new Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly should be in no doubt that she must find a way to ensure that this work goes ahead. Soon.

We are waiting.
