Answers and action

THE government has asked some detailed questions about plans to rebuild Birmingham's ramshackle, overcrowded New Street Station.

And the man in charge Coun Mike Whitby must now do what good leaders should – shoulder responsibility and answer the probes, however petty he feels they are.

We hope that he answers ministers' doubts swiftly and thoroughly so work to replace Brum's shameful station can go ahead without delay.

This is a project that must not be hampered by political point-scoring between the council's Conservative leaders and a Labour government.

The Birmingham Mail has steadfastly supported efforts to get New Street bulldozed and rebuilt and we will continue to bang the drum.

Today we urge Coun Whitby and Labour ministers like Liam Byrne to work together to provide the answers the government wants so Brum gets a decent station.
