Tough but fair

DO NOT run away with the notion that incompetence, corruption, dishonesty or laziness are widespread among Birmingham City Council's workforce.

The vast majority of the authority's 40,000 employees do a good job, many in difficult circumstances.

But as in any large organisation there are those who fiddle, skive and take liberties.

It is good to learn that the council is taking a tough line with those who fall seriously below acceptable standards, sacking almost 500 employees each year.

The council has a duty, of course, to ensure that disciplinary action is fair and, when appropriate, to show mercy.

But no-one should forget that local authority employees' wages come out of OUR pockets and, as their paymasters, we have every right to expect them to provide the highest level of service.

There can be no mercy for those who let us down.
