TOO many deadbeat dads have for too long avoided providing maintenance for their estranged children.
Good news, then, that Work and Pensions Secretary John Hutton is planning far tougher measures to get them to shoulder responsibilities they would prefer to ignore.
First step will be the naming and shaming on the internet of those who have dodged maintenance payments.
That is a step in the right direction.
Why should youngsters suffer because parents are too selfish or feckless to stump up cash for their care?
Why should hard-pressed tax-payers be expected to bear the burden instead?
Fingers crossed that Mr Hutton's tough words translate into truly tough action that will shatter once and for all the illusion held by some fathers that their children's welfare is none of their concern.
