IF THE number-crunchers and their political masters in Whitehall are serious about tackling traffic congestion and pollution, there should be no question of ending free parking at this region's railway and metro stations.
Public transport has to be a convenient and cheap option if commuters are to be teased out of their cars.
That will not be achieved by the Department of Transport denying Centro-PTA the money it needs to continue to offer free parking at 39 local stations.
It is probably true that some people may walk or cycle to stations if they cannot park their cars free.
But it is likely that far more will clog up local side streets by leaving their vehicles there and that even more will resort of jumping into their cars for their daily journeys.
The result will be busier roads and more fumes choking the atmosphere.
This penny-pinching proposal must be nipped in the bud.
Otherwise we will have another example of the government contradicting the green principles it claims to have adopted.
Keep station parking free!
