Bring back the Heathens!

I MET a woman once. No, I really did, it can happen. And I fell in love with her I heard it's good for the soul.

During an intimate moment I asked her "Do you like speedway?"

And blow me down she replied: "Speedway? I love speedway."

So I'm thinking 'Get in this could be The One'. Then she said: "I used to be a Cradley Heathen!"

Typical you find the woman of your dreams and she is a Cradley Heathen!

"What about the Brummies?" I asked as my heart sank scared of the answer.

"Can't remember the Brummies but my teenage years were a blur of Heathen hedonism," she said before adding "Coor I still go weak at the knees at the thought of Jan Pedersen."

How could Skidder Smith ever live up to the great Jan Pedersen? I could feel the sweet love slipping through my fingers.

I suppose the moral of the story is don't ask questions if you don't want to know the answer.

But that got me thinking now the Brummies are back why can't the Heathens make a return as well after all what can be better than a good old local derby.

Coventry and Wolverhampton are in the Elite League and chances to getting beaten by them are few and far between but if the Heathens made a return then derby days would be great.

On Sunday the Brummies drew with Kings Lynn Stars giving the team enough points to progress to the semi-finals. A fantastic achievement.

But perhaps it was me but on Sunday something was missing. I was not feeling the speedway like I normally do.

The smells, sounds and racing was the same but then I realised what was different.

It was not dark. Sounds daft I know but the atmosphere always seems better at night when it is in the day it just feels like practice.

And Perry Barr does look better by moonlight.

If the Heathens were making the short journey across the Black Country then the excitement would be at fever pitch for a bank holiday battle royal.

What is nice is that though the bikers are not coming to Perry Barr old fans are coming to see what is happening in Birmingham.

And the success of the Brummies is inspiring the lovers of Speedway in the Black Country to mount a campaign to bring back the Heathens.

What great news and guess who might hold the keys to the door of Black Country speedway heaven? Dudley Council.

Great. Remember the trials and tribulations of the Brummies return with thousands of fanatics having the return of speedway held up by moaning residents complaining about 'the noise'.

I grew up in Perry Barr listening to the roar of speedway and it did me no harm, well then again perhaps that's not the best argument!

But hopefully next season the Heathens will be gracing the scribblers programmes again as they could be in the Premier League.

The lass with with Heathen heart is sadly no more, but you will be glad to know there are a few more ladies on the horizon, and I wont be broaching the 'S' question again.

After all they might say they are Coventry fans.
