EDWARD House, the "home from home" for the parents of seriously ill patients at Birmingham Children's Hospital, will be sadly missed.
For years it has provided more than just accommodation: it has offered support and comfort, too.
But it is to be replaced by Ronald McDonald House, a £5 million building being funded by the charitable arm of the fast food group.
Facilities will be splendid and there is no reason to think the support offered at Edward House will disappear as the bulldozers move in.
Even those who shrink from eating Big Macs and Chicken McNuggetts should thank Ronald for his kindness.

I am devastated at this news! Edward House was and still is a sanctuary for many families at their times of crisis. Ronald Macdonald? Why? Why fix something that's not needing fixed, added to maybe but not bulldozed!!!!
Our family left our home in Scotland and lived in Edward House when our son had heart surgery then later organ transplants at BCH, Edward House was our safe cosy haven...it holds many memories it will be sad to have to say farewell :0(
