HACKLES will rise more swiftly than yeast in a warm room over suggestions that Eurocrats are planning to fiddle with Britain's loaves.
Another barmy plan by European Union pen-pushers hellbent on eroding our traditions, it is tempting to chunter.
But the truth is not so straightforward as critics are claiming.
Planned new EU rules would mean that British bakers, presently tied by rules on loaf sizes that have existed since the 13th century, would be free to make smaller sizes.
Local baker Devon Bonner has welcomed the proposal, saying smaller loaves would suit customers who live alone.
There are, however, dangers. Would the new relaxed regulations, for instance, allow unscrupulous bakers to rip-off customers?
EU needs to make sure any changes to the law include safeguards to ensure that loaves do not shrink while prices remain the same.
Then perhaps they should concentrate their efforts on the biggest scandal of all.
Why is so much of Britain's bread pappy, characterless stuff compared to the glorious, crusty stuff scoffed by our Continental cousins?
