UNLESS sea levels rise considerably more than has been predicted, it is clear that Birmingham's beach will lack an important element....water.
The inspiration has come from Paris Plage. But that lies on the banks of the lovely River Seine.
Brum's beach, being created by the council with the backing of airline bmibaby, will be slap-bang in the city centre, surrounded by shops and offices.
And while Paris often sizzles in summer, who but the most optimistic would predict that Birmingham will enjoy balmy temperatures to make the beach an attractive place to spend a few hours?
We commend the council for trying to find new ways to make the city more attractive, but are unconvinced that Birmingham Beach will be a winner.
Building an over-sized sandpit is no substitute for the major initiatives that are needed to keep Brum great.

Without an outdoor swimming pool, this will be a disaster. With one, a few grassy banks would be better than sand. The key element, water, has been forgotten it seems.

Also forgotten is that water is required for cooling off and washing off the sand! Failing a pool, a big public fountain would be ok to cool off and splash about in.
