WHILE those building Birmingham's beach will be hoping for a heatwave this summer, West Midlands Police may have different ideas.
For last year's long, hot summer has been blamed for a 1.4 per cent rise in the number of violent crimes over the 12 months that ended in March.
There is no room for complacency and, of course, police must do all in their power to tackle thuggery.
But overall crime is down for the sixth consecutive year and people's confidence in the police has increased.
There is still a great deal of work ahead for Chief Constable Paul Scott-Lee and his team, but there is reason for optimism.

Why do I feel like we are a cast off of Paris?? First the big Ferris wheel on Broad Street, now a silly idea for a beach in the city centre. When's Birmingham going to come up with some of its own ideas? THEN we can be proud.
