Winning start is vital

TONIGHT'S the night when the fires that burn in Birmingham speedway fans' hearts will be well and truly stoked as the Brummies face their first Premier Trophy challenge.

The team face the Stoke Potters in front of their own fans in Perry Barr for the curtain raiser on a season that ends in October.

The competition has three groups of five teams with winners and best performing runners-up going through to the semi-finals.

It will not be easy for the new boys as they have been thrown in with last season's top two teams, King's Lynn Stars and Sheffield Tigers, so a winning start is vital.

Team manager Graham Drury has already outlined the challenge facing the men in yellow and red in British speedway's second division.

He said: "I believe we're in the hardest group, but we'll be going all-out to try and win it and progress into the semi-finals.

"Last week was a great opening night for us and I hope many of those fans return for more and get right behind the Brummies."

Ulrich Ostergaard, Aidan Collins, Jason Lyons, Emiliano Sanchez, Brent Werner, Lee Smart and Ben Powell will be trying to become heroes tonight as they battle it out with Stoke's Rusty Harrison, Ben Barker, Garry Stead, Robbie Kessler, Paul Pickering, Barrie Evans and Jack Hargreaves.

For all those fans who will be seeing a league meeting for the first time here are a quick run through of the rules.

Speedway operates a sliding scale for scoring known as the 3-2-1-0 method, with points awarded to all but the final placed competitor.

These points accumulate over the competition, with riders points either counting towards individual or team placings. In the event of a tie, another heat is run between those on level points.

Thank God that speedway fixtures start at 7.45pm on Wednesdays because fans will not be put off their dinner if we lose.

Unlike football which divides the city speedway can unite fans from across Birmingham, so whether you are Villa or Blues or from Stockland Green or Kitts Green, Short Heath or Kings Heath, Perry Barr or somewhere far get behind the Brummies tonight.

When the riders risk their lives for glory they will be doing it for the pride of Birmingham and everyone who lives in this wonderful city!

COME ON THE BRUMMIES!
