TODAY'S shocking pictures of an arson attack on a Birmingham bus show the challenge that faces Travel West Midlands as it attempts to make their services attractive.
The incident was unusual in its severity and recklessness, but every day there are examples of anti-social behaviour on our buses.
Some, it is true, could be stopped or prevented by conductors.
But who would argue that an old-fashioned clippie would be able to tackle serious incidents such as that captured by CCTV on the top deck of a No 57?
The answer must be a greater police presence, both uniformed and undercover, on board buses.
For one thing is certain. Motorists will be reluctant to embrace public transport while buses are regarded, unfairly, as shabby, dangerous places ruled by louts and thugs.
In the meantime, study carefully the pictures we have published today to see if you recognise the knuckle-dragger who gained pleasure by causing more than £4,000 damage and endangering other passengers.
If you do, phone police on 0845 113 5000, email safertravel@travelwm.co.uk or send a confidential text to 07624 818332.
Let us cage this lunatic and take a small step towards reclaiming OUR buses.
