ACCORDING to an old Greek saying, a civilisation is not truly great until its old men plant trees in the shade of which they know they will never sit.
Today we face uncomfortable choices about the sorts of lives we live, knowing that we personally may not benefit from any sacrifices we make.
The environment is at the centre of the political agenda even though the full impact of our decisions will be felt not by us, but our children and our children's children.
Some experts question the green agenda, but the majority scientific view is that we cannot sustain lifestyles that devour so many of the planet's resources and produce such high levels of pollution.
Whichever side you choose to believe, ask yourself a simple question: is it worth taking the risk of destroying the Earth for future generations?
The Birmingham Mail this weeks joins the debate by highlighting green issues.
Read and the articles and wonder how you can ensure that the world is a pleasant place for descendants you will never know.

moseley is a very pleasant green district i have been fortunate to live here for most of my life , now the city centre is looking very smart and attracting many people who wish to live there so why are trees in the centre conspicuous by their absence , bath row is a good example its a wide thoroughfare and trees would certainly improve its appearance, is there a reason the council seem reluctant to plant in the city centre
