Keep them safe

DOGS can be wonderful companions, providing affection for the lonely, exercise for the lazy and teaching a sense of responsibility to those charged with their care.

But they can also be a menace if they are not properly trained, are mistreated or are put in situations that can spiral out of control.

Recent tragic attacks that have left youngsters dead and horrifically scarred show just how great the dangers can be.

Top marks, then, to organisers of Crufts for highlighting a child safety campaign at this week's show.

The four-day event, which opens at NEC tomorrow, is famous around the world for shining a spotlight on canine excellence.

But it is right that experts should be explaining how to youngsters can stay safe when they are around dogs.

It could be the difference between your child and pet being best pals - or something altogether more frightening.
