Grasping a thorny issue

WELL done to Birmingham City Council's rulers for attempting to sort out the mess that is the authority's pay roll.

The inequality, with some employees picking up a pittance and others pocketing a small fortune, could not be allowed to continue.

Of course there will be losers as well as winners and it is right that the council is looking at ways to lessen the impact on employees who face a pay cut.

But the measures are necessary if the under-paid - often female employees such as carers, dinner ladies and cleaners - are to get a fair deal.

It is a thorny issue, but one that had to be grasped.

Faith Thomas:

It is great that effort is made to make sure people get paid the same but it is unfair that those people who will suffer a wage cut have to do so - It was not their decision to be paid that much.
There are people who are going to suffer hardship from this single status pay - people who have morgages to pay, children and families to support. I just hope that there is something done by BCC to help them adjust to the changes that have been thrust upon them.
