IN AN age when travel is relatively cheap and easy, a nation's borders can never be totally secure.
But more can and should be done to keep out the illegal immigrants who sneak into Britain or to deport those who are already here.
So well done to Home Office Minister Liam Byrne for today launching a £100 million crackdown to tackle the issue.
This is not racist. It is not about keeping out those who have a genuine need to settle in the UK or can contribute positively to this country.
It is about ensuring that immigration is properly regulated so that we can cope with the numbers of new people arriving.
Common sense and compassion must be applied when cases are considered, but the cheats, liars and chancers who arrive at our borders should be sent packing.
