MOST of us would probably admit that we have witnessed yobbishness and turned away, deciding it is probably safer and certainly easier not to challenge those responsible.
Yet most of us chunter on about declining standards and rue the anti-social behaviour we routinely see around us.
We cannot have it both ways.
The louts and thugs who blight our streets and buses will continue to rule the roost unless decent people stand up to them.
This is not a call for vigilantism nor for foolhardy folk to put themselves at risk by confronting thugs who will not think twice about attacking them.
But we cannot as a society afford to ignore the sort of incident that left teenager Ramanpreet Kaur Bhalla scared to use public transport after a gang of girls dragged her from the No 11 bus and attacked her before stealing her purse.
She says other passengers and the driver paid no heed as she pleaded for help.
It is difficult to believe that the thugs would not have backed down had they been confronted by several determined adults.
Or, if people were genuinely too frightened, that they would not have left Ramanpreet alone and fled if passengers had ostentatiously used their mobile phones to summon the police.
The first step towards claiming back our neighbourhoods and buses lies in our own hands.
Do not tolerate yobbishness.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.
