Keep us dry

RAISE a glass (of non-alcoholic beverage, of course) to the Bournville residents who are battling against plans to allow booze to be sold in the area.

The ever-expanding supermarket giant Tesco wants to start selling alcohol at one of its stores on the edge of the famous "dry zone".

If Tesco will not listen sympathetically to the opponents, then Birmingham's licensing committee should.

Bournville is a unique area, its tranquil atmosphere enhanced by the ban on pubs and off-licenses.

It would be a shame to undermine the suburb's specialness and to risk - as residents fear - unleashing a wave of booze-fuelled anti-social behaviour.

The ban, enforced since the Quaker Cadbury family established their chocolate factory and model village for their workers more than a century ago, should stay in force.

There a plenty of other parts of Brum where the hard stuff is freely available.

Bournville wants to be different - and residents' wishes should be respected.

Mark Ford:

Good on the locals. I used to live near Bournville and it is definitely one of the nicer parts of Birmingham because of the lack of pubs and booze on the streets.
If people need to buy alcohol they can pop down to nearby Selly Oak where there are plenty of places to do so, including Tesco Express on the Bristol Road.
Why Tesco needs a second outlet so close by can be spelled out in one word - greed.
