THE old saying 'you can't do right for doing wrong' seems to be haunting Birmingham New Street at the moment.
They unveil plans for a grand redesign and half of the city give it that look which the great and good give tramps.
That's why it will probably come as no surprise to see that their decision to upgrade the screens at the back entrance of the station has been upsetting passengers.
It seems the not-so-recently installed blue screens have been deemed surplus to requirements so a new fetching black and orange design has been introduced.
The two just beyond the ticket barrier haven't caused too many problems on the whole. Given the fact that the old monitors were perched somewhere near the halfway point of earth and the moon, the new near eye level screens can almost be forgiven for scrolling the stations a particular train calls at across at a speed even Rain Man would struggle to read (something which, thankfully, becomes easier to read as you get used to the new-look displays).
The problem, it seems, is the screens further down the concourse.
Lots of up to date information can't be a problem can it. Well yes, it can.
"It's all well and good installing the new screens and giving us information on our trains," said one of OK Commuter's spies at the station. "But perhaps putting a clock on it so we could see how long we have to sprint to the platform might be useful?"
Proof, perhaps, that New Street Station really is stuck in a time warp...
